It's a Pitta Problem

It's August already and if you have not noticed yet, it is kinda hot outside. If you find that you are feeling out of sorts and not quite sure what is going on, consider looking at your caffeine habit. Yes, I mean you.

Hot drinks such as tea, coffee or espresso might not be in your best interest, especially if you have a high Pitta dosha (not sure, take the quiz!) and we are knee deep in Pitta season (i.e. summer). This is easier said than done, but it might help if you consider the many benefits of cutting back or stopping all together (shouts of blasphemy!). I've noticed that after the very hot July here on the East Coast my coffee/tea (not together) habits have begun to naturally shift on their own.

If you are not sure how to approach this, begin to look at the habit, your routine, and does it serve your best interests. Consider cutting back a half cup each day for a week and then drop one of your caffeine breaks and replace with something cooling, like water or fruit infused water (cucumber, mint, mango, orange, lemon, etc.). Avoid seeing this as denying yourself, rather you are bringing greater freedom from your bondage to the habit.

Another option such as diluted iced tea (think lots of ice) or iced coffee might also work for you, just be mindful of the sugar content if you are grabbing one on the go. Also, think quality rather than quantity, good coffee vs. convenience.

There is a GREAT link below that explains how caffeine affects the brain, take a look during your next coffee break.
